Red Flown cachet on the back Flown in Nimrod of No 201 Sqn RAF Kinloss to Jan Mayen, Spitzbergen, Bear Island, Narvik, and over the waters through which the allied evacuation of Norway took Place, where HMS Glorious was lost and where 201 Sqn maintained convoy escort patrols throughout the Norwegian campaign.
Special.Signed.by Air Chief Marshal Sir Kenneth Cross KCB CBE DSO DFC ACM
Sent to reinforce British forces in Norway.
Flying their Hurricanes from the deck of HMS Glorious they arrived eventually at their operating base of Bardufoss from where they were to cover operations around Narvik. On 3 June he learnt that Norway was to evacuated completely. Given the choice of flying his aircraft further North, dismantling them and putting them aboard a steamer or leaving them and burning them, he proposed an alternative - to fly them onto the deck of HMS Glorious. Having successfully landed his squadron on the carrier it made it's way independently back to Scapa Flow. Unfortunately, it was attacked by the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and sunk, 'Bing' Cross and his flight commander, 'Pat' Jameson being the only two pilots of 46 to survive. Scrambling aboard a Cayley float together with about 30 others they drifted for three days and two nights until being rescued by the Norwegian trawler SS Borgund, taken to the Faroes and then to Rosyth aboard HMS Veteran. also Signed by Major R T Partridge DSO Royal Maries. Appointed Officer Commanding No 800 SSqn on 1st April 1940, on 10th April took off from Hatston in the Orkneys just after 0500 hrs leading his Sqn of Blackburn Skua diver bombers to attack the German Cruiser Konigsberg in Bergen Fjord. Konigsberg was sunk by Co- Ordinated action of Nos 800 and 803 Sqns who returned to Hatston with the loss of one Skua. Major Partridge was accordingly appointed to the Distinguished Service Order on 7th May 1940. . Certified Copy No of 965 Signed W S O Randle WW11 Wellington Pilot.

On 16 February 1942 north of Crete, in the Mediterranean, HM Submarine Thrasher, after attacking and sinking a supply ship, was itself attacked.Thrasher was subjected to a three hour depth charge attack and aerial bombing.
Later, after surfacing, two unexploded bombs were discovered in the gun-casing. Petty officer Gould and Lieutenant Roberts removed the first one without too much difficulty, but the second bomb had penetrated the side plating of the gun emplacement, and then the deck casing above the pressure hull. Roberts and Gould entered the confined space (which was no more than 2 ft high in places), and lying flat, wormed past deck supports, battery ventilators, and drop bollards. The petty officer then lay on his back with the 150 lb bomb in his arms while the Williams dragged him along by the shoulders. "It was then a matter of the two of us, lying horizontally, pushing and pulling the bomb back through the casing. It was pitch black and the bomb was making this horrible ticking noise while the submarine was being buffeted by the waves Meanwhile, Thrasher was surfaced, stationary, and close inshore to enemy waters. If the submarine was forced to crash dive, both men would drown. It was 50 minutes before they got the bomb clear, wrapped it in sacking, and dropped it over the side.

Capt Philip John Gardner VC MC Royal Armoured Corps. Awarded the Victoria Cross on 23rd November 1941 at Tobruk,Libya.Awarded the VC for rescuing two armoured cars and their crews under heavy attack despite being wounded.Tobruk Libya.
Richard Henry Burton VC The Duke of Wellington's Regiment 8th Ocober 1944 Monte Ceco Italy
Private Burton was runner, through to assault the crest from which four Spandaus at least were firing. Private Burton rushed forward and, engaging the first Spandau position with his Tommy gun, killed the crew of three. When the assault was again held up by murderous fire from two more machine guns Private Burton, again showing complete disregard for his own safety, dashed forward toward the first machine gun using his Tommy gun until his ammunition was exhausted. He then picked up a Bren gun and firing from the hip succeeded in killing or wounding the crews of the two machine guns. Thanks to his outstanding courage the Company was then able to consolidate on the forward slope of the feature.
The enemy immediately counter-attacked fiercely but Private Burton, in spite of most of his comrades being either dead or wounded, once again dashed forward on his own initiative and directed such accurate fire with his Bren gun on the enemy that they retired leaving the feature firmly in our hands.

The enemy later counter-attacked again on the adjoining platoon position and Private Burton, who had placed himself on the flank, brought such accurate fire to bear that this counterattack also failed to dislodge the Company from its position. Private Burton's magnificent gallantry and total disregard of his own safety during many hours of fierce fighting in mud ,and continuous rain were an inspiration to all his comrades.

Channel Dash Operation Cerberus. Signed Frazer VC
12 Feb 92 BFPS2282 50th Anniversary of Operation Cerberus The Channel Dash Operation Cerberus. The German Battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had been sheltering in Brest harbour since May 1941 and in June 1941 had been joined by the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. There they had been prime targets for the RAF and no fewer than 110 air raids had been made, damaging but failing to destroy them.Royal Navy ships had been committed to watching the entrance to Brest harbour when they could have been involved in more pressing duties in the Atlantic The Germans had decided that the ships have to move out of Brest. So escorted by 6 destroyers and a small fleet of support craft, the three ships left Brest under low cloud and in poor visibility, A watching British submarine, outside the harbour had decided that the Germans would not sail that night and had gone off station. British forces were stood down.
It was not until 08.30hrs on 12th February, that information unusual activity in the Channel reached the RAF and it was not until 10.20 that any special reconnaissance was ordered. At 11.09hrs a Spitfire spotted the German ships, which were in the Straits of Dover and enjoying continuous fighter cover from the Luftwaffe. By noon they had passed through the minefield and were able to steam at full speed, taking them beyond the range of the coastal guns at Dover and enabling them easily to avoid attacks by RN motor topedo boats.Six swordsfish led by Lieutenant Commander Eugene Esmonde, attacked at 12.30hrs, without fighter escort. These were all shot down by Bf109s and FW 190s, all but five of the crews being killed and with none of their torpedos finding the target.Blue flown cachet flown in Sea King HAR3, ZE369 of No 202 Sqn from RAF Manston to the area in the Channel off Kent coast where the six Swordfish of the Fleet Air Arm were shot down and there a wreath was dropped into the sea in memory of those who lost their lives. Personally Signed by Odette Marie Céline Hallowes GC, MBE, Chevalier de la légion d'honneur, (28 April 1912 - 13 March 1995) was an Allied heroine of World War II.
Odette Marie Céline Brailly was born in Amiens in the Somme département of France. Her father was the First World War hero Gaston Brailly who was killed at Verdun in 1918 when she was six years old.
She met the Englishman Roy Sansom in Bologna and married him in 1931, moving with him to England. Her husband enlisted in 1940. When the War Office requested all French-born residents of London to supply them with photographs of their home towns, Odette volunteered her family album, which contained many useful depictions of the Channel coast. She joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY), and was later asked to train under Colonel Maurice Buckmaster of the Special Operations Executive and return to Nazi-occupied France to work with the French underground. She left her three daughters in the care of her husband.
She made a landing near Cannes in 1942, where she made contact with her supervisor, Peter Churchill. Using the code name Lise, she brought him funds and acted as his radio operator.
Churchill's operation in France was betrayed by a double agent, and Odette and Churchill were arrested on 16 April 1943 and imprisoned. Under torture by the Gestapo at Fresnes prison in Paris, Odette stuck to her cover story that Churchill was the nephew of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and that she was Peter's wife. The hope was that in this way their treatment would be mitigated.
Odette was condemned to death in June 1943 and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She survived the war and testified against the prison guards at a 1946 war crimes trial.
Odette's husband had died during her imprisonment and she married Peter Churchill in 1947. They were divorced in 1956.
Her third husband was Geoffrey Hallowes.
Odette Hallowes was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and was the first of three World War II FANY members to be awarded the George Cross (gazetted 20 August 1946).<Actinic:Variable Name = '1'/> She remains the only woman to have received the George Cross whilst alive, all other female GC awards to date being posthumous. She was also appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur for her work with the French resistance.
In later life Odette's house was burgled and her GC was stolen but after an appeal it was returned with a note saying 'You, madam, appear to be a dear old lady. I am not all that bad- it's just circumstances. Your little dog really loves me. I gave him a nice pat and left him a piece of meat. Sincerely yours, A Bad Egg. Certified Copy No of 800

He was taken to a German military hospital and operated on by a captured Allied surgeon, but was regarded as a hopeless case and marked down for kindly hypodermic euthanasia. On the first day he sat up to eat, a member of the Resistance told him that unless he could walk out in the next 15 minutes, he might not be able to get out at all.
