John Grandy was the only officer who fought and commanded a squadron during the Battle of Britain to reach the post
Grandy served in World War II initially as Squadron Commander at No. 13 Flying Training School. In April 1940 he was given command of No. 219 Squadron flying Blenheims from RAF Catterick on night patrol duties and then went on a month later to command No. 249 Squadron flying Hurricanes from RAF Church Fenton during the Battle of Britain His squadron shot down more German aircraft than any other squadron during the Battle of Britain, one of his pilots won the Victoria Cross and Gandy himself was shot down and hospitalised in September 1940. In December 1940 he joined the Air Staff at Headquarters RAF Fighter Command and then transferred to the Staff at No. 52 Operational Training Unit. He was promoted to Wing Commander on a temporary basis on 1 March 1941 and in November 1941 he was sent to RAF Duxford where he was given command of flying operations. In February 1942, he was given overall command of RAF Duxford and he oversaw the establishment there of the RAF's first Typhoon Wing. He was promoted to wing Commander on a war substantive basis on 12 August 1942 and mentioned in despatches on 1 January 1943.
Grandy was given command of No. 210 Group RAF defending the Port of Tripoli in February 1943 and then went to Egypt to command No. 73 Operational Training Unit at RAF Abu Suwayr in September 1943. Having been promoted to the temporary rank of group captain on 1 July 1944, he became Officer Commanding No. 341 Wing fighting the Japanese in the Far East in February 1945. He became Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters No. 232 Group in September 1945 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 19 October 1945.Details enclosed. Certified Copy No 0216 of 1000. In 1943 he was posted to No 613 Squadron, which had just re-equipped with the De Havilland Mosquito, as a
Flight Commander. Within three months he was appointed CO of 613 and began to make something of a name for himself in No 2 Group, leading low level attacks against precision targets first as a squadron commander and later as a wing leader. These raids included an attack on the Gestapo HQ in The Hague on 11 Apr 1944 and the attack on 'Shell House' in Copenhagen in March 1945.

During the 1920's he operated many former WW1 aircraft in Australia and in 1931 founded Percival Aircraft, famous for the Gull, Mew Gull and Vega Gull, which built nearly 3000 proctors for military use in WW11.This cover was taken by courier from Estourmel in France to Wildenrath in Germany on the 2 June 1977, the 60th Anniversary of the attack that led to the award of the Victoria Cross to Billy Bishop. It was later flown to London by No 60 Sqn Subsequently Flown by Air Canada across the Atlantic to Toronto and back to London. RAF. The Picture Cachet on this cover depicts Sqn Ldr D Fopp's action of 3rd September 1940.
Personally Signed Sqn.Ldr.Desmond Fopp was the last surviving Australian fighter pilot from the Battle of Britain, in which he was severely burned after attacking Messerschmitt fighters.
Joining the RAFVR in 1938, Des Fopp was called up at the outbreak of war, joining 17 Squadron in May 1940, and fought with them in France and afterwards during the Battle of Britain. After several successes he was shot down, baled out badly burned and was hospitalised. Returning to 17 squadron in July 1941, he then joined 132 Squadron at Peterhead. In late 1943 he went as Liaison Officer to the 8th and 9th USAAF, and in May 1944 became an Instructor. He died 8th August 2005.

Colonel Stanislaw Skalski DSO DFC WW11 Ace
After completing Pilot Training School in 1938 Skalski was ordered to the 142nd Fighter Squadron in Torun On 1 September 1939 he attacked a German Henschel Hs 126 reconnaissance aircraft, which was eventually shot down by Marian Pisarek. Skalski then landed next to it, helped to bandage wounded crew members and arranged for them to be taken to a military hospital. By 16 September Skalski reached "ace" status, claiming a total of six German aircraft and making him the first Allied air ace of World War II.
Soon after he fled the country with other Polish pilots to Romania, and from there via Beirut to France and after went on to fight with the Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain.
In August 1940 Pilot Officer Skalski joined 501 Squadron. From 30 August to 2 September 1940 he shot down a He 111 bomber and three Messerschmitt Bf 109s. On 5 September Skalski himself was shot down.<Actinic:Variable Name = '2'/> Skalski bailed out with severe burns that hospitalized him for six weeks. He returned to his unit in late October 1940. During the Battle of Britain, he was credited with four planes shot down and one shared.

Cover utilizes JSF 12 Miniature Sheet which depicts 32 Squadron de Havilland DH2, Gloster Grebe, Hawker Hurricane and BAe 125 CC1. 32 Squadron was formed at Netheravon on 12 January 1916 and fought in France in WW1 with DH2 Fighters. Disbanded in 1919 and reformed in 1923 again as a Fighter Squadron. During the inter war years 32 Squadron flew Snipes, Grebes, Gamecocks,Siskins,Bulldogs and Gauntlets. In 1938 Hurricanes were received and the Squadron was deployed to France before being based at RAF Biggin Hill during the Battle of Britain. In 1942 re equipped with Spitfires the Squadron deployed to Algeria and remained in the Middle East, Southern Europe , Cyprus and the Persian Gulf flying a range of aircraft until becoming a Communications Squadron at RAF Northolt in 1969. 13 Oct 92 BFPS 2336 Special Postmark 75th Anniv 111 Squadron. Red Flown cachet flown in Tornado of No 111 Sqn from RAF leuchars . Personally Signed by Sqn Ldr M.W.Smyth volunteered for aircrew in July 1940. After completing training as a pilot he was posted to No 111 Squadron in August 1941 flying Spitfires on offensive sweeps, Bomber escorts and Rhubarbs over Northern France. During these operations he destroyed one Me 109E and set fire to a large oil storage in Dunkirk harbour when his aircraft was hit by flak..
